A dedicated educator, administrator, and scholar, Marilyn earned her Doctorate from the University of Calgary and devoted her life to the power of education and the strength found in human connection fostered on respect. She touched the lives of many students and had a gift for bringing people together in classrooms, in institutions, and beyond, believing in building networks of empowered resilience, guided by values, vision, and voice, as the foundation of peace.
A true world citizen and traveler, Marilyn lived with a sense of harmony and advocacy that touched all who knew and loved her. A lover of music, tai chi, and the magnificent abundance of the natural world, she found daily joy in the steadfast companionship of her beloved dog Poppy and in her Point McKay neighbourhood, its people, its sense of belonging, and the restorative paths along the Bow River. She leaves behind a legacy not only in her academic work and her career as an educator, but in the lives she shaped and the communities she helped build.
Marilyn was the beloved daughter of Emmett and Anita Tobin, and the cherished sister of Rosie (Doug), Maureen (Bruce), and Teresa (Boyd). She was a loving aunt to Patrick (Corrine), Brendan, Ryan (Mike), Liam (Kendra), and Gillian (Jo), and a proud great-aunt to Eli.
She was also fortunate to be surrounded by devoted friends Marilyn and Dianne throughout her life. Among those she held close were Andrea, Nicole and Carlos, and Anup, and so many others whose lives she touched along the way.
Child Haven International was a cause Marilyn held close to her heart. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour her life are invited to donate at childhaven.ca.
Marilyn will be forever missed, and her lessons will continue to guide us forward, together.
At Marilyn's request, a private family gathering will take place at a later date.
