Born in Calgary on June 2, 1952, young Marlin faced challenges from birth as he was born without his left foot. His dad fashioned his first prosthetic limb, and Marlin learned to walk, and play as children do. He developed a love for nature and the outdoors that would last the rest of his life. He loved camping and riding his bike in the remote areas he camped in. He also enjoyed drives in the country, looking after the yard, and gardening. He was especially proud of the tomatoes he grew, sharing them with family and friends.
He attended Stanley Jones School and Crescent Heights High School, where he first met Dawn. High school sweethearts, they went their separate ways after graduating. They ran into each other again while shopping at Zellers in 1994, and over a bite to eat in the Zellers cafeteria they reconnected.
Marlin excelled at his long career as a GM Partsman, and it took him to many areas of the province. Beginning in Lethbridge at Enerson Motors, he also moved to Edmonton and St. Albert, working at GM dealerships there. Eventually returning to Calgary, he worked at Shaw GMC and Jack Carter Chevrolet.
Marlin is survived by his wife of 17 years, Dawn Gordon; his sister Linda (Mike) Snelling, niece Holly (Tylor) Robinson, nephew Jason Snelling (Scott Troudt); and his brother Bryan Hofos, niece Janet (Michael) Classen, nephew Robert Hofos (Nicole Thomas). He is remembered and missed by Dawn’s son Aaron (Kate) Van Hoevelaak and their children Franklin and Jackson, as well as Dawn’s son Tyler Van Hoevelaak.
Marlin is predeceased by his parents, Stan and Hazel Hofos; and sister-in-law, Tressa Hofos.
Marlin LOVED to chat, and will be missed by his friends, neighbors, his hairdresser, the postman, cashiers, pharmacists, and the neighborhood dog walkers! He would always remember names and things about them and their families.
A small Memorial Open House will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4th Street NW, Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on July 26, 2025, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.
