She is survived by sons, Terry (Marg) and Roger (Lin); grandsons, Trevor (Olivia), Ryan (Dianne), Cody (Lori), Tyler (Denise), and Devin (Julie) as well as by five great granddaughters and three great grandsons. She was predeceased by husband, Bruce; parents, Sarah and John Finlay and sister, Betty Clifton. She was born in County Antrim, Ireland and immigrated to Canada at the age of eight to farm in the Claresholm area. After finishing school, she trained in Calgary as a typist bookkeeper and enjoyed her career until she met and married Bruce Johns in 1948 and raised two sons, Terry and Roger, in Capitol Hill and Brentwood. She and Bruce were married for forty-nine years until his passing in 1997. Meta worked for Sears Canada for twenty-five years and in retirement enjoyed travelling, time at their cabin in Invermere, china painting, bridge, her ladies Birthday Club and activities at Confederation Park Seniors Club. In 2010, she moved to Brooks Sunshine Gardens Seniors Retirement Home. She will be remembered not only as a loving but also as a fun loving mother, grandma and great grandma who enjoyed family, preparing wonderful meals and baking. She also enjoyed singing the “good old songs”, playing cards and reading. The family thanks the staff at Edgemont Seniors Retirement Home, Calgary; Sunrise Gardens Retirement Centre, Brooks and Brooks and District Seniors Outreach Program for the wonderful care and support over the past fourteen years.
A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 or Alzheimer Society Alberta, 303 – 6707 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, Alberta T2V 0E5.
