Martha was born in Jasien Krs Leipe Westpreussen, Poland on January 3, 1928. In 1945 she moved to Germany. She married Gunther Schmidt on May 26, 1950 and in 1953 they immigrated to Canada, landing in St. John, New Brunswick. After living in a camp for 3 weeks, they were able to move to Calgary, Alberta upon receiving financial assistance from Martha’s Aunt, Natalia Fech.
In 1958 Martha and Gunther built a home in Forest Lawn where they raised their family. They never left this home. Martha – a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother – loved to cook for family and friends. Everyone’s Favorite was her Black Forest cake. She enjoyed company, and everyone was greeted with a big smile and a warm hug. Her back yard was a rainbow of colors, whether flower or vegetables – she grew it all. Her passion was working in her garden where she particularly enjoyed her precious apple tree, Saskatoon berries and tomatoes. She was very generous and everyone enjoyed the yield from her bountiful garden.
During the winter months, Martha pursued another passion, her handiwork. She was talented in sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidering. Her work included everything from crocheting baby blankets to embroidering beautiful large tablecloths.
Martha is survived by her three sons; Hans (Ria) Schmidt from Osoyoos, BC, Harold (Cindy) Schmidt from California and Ralph Schmidt from Calgary. She will be lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Martha is predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Gunther on September 16, 2006 and a grandchild Colton Mackenzie Schmidt on December 18, 2009.
