Mary Violet Holte-Smith
October 14, 1923 – January 11, 2020
Mary Violet Holte-Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 96 years.
She was born in Portsmouth, UK, October 14th, 1923, daughter of Thomas and Violet.
Mary was predeceased in death by her husband of 61 years, Arnold Chapman Holte-Smith; and daughter Christina Marshall.
She is survived by daughter Gillian Sears-Smith (John); grandchildren Brent McMahon, Paul McMahon, Richard Marshall, Jason Marshall (Irene), Shannon Gladue (Kerry), Troy Marshall (Kristi), and Sara Marshall (Bill); 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. All of them she loved deeply.
Mary served in the Royal Navy during World War II, where she met her partner, husband, and love of her life. Afterwards, she spent many years in India and Great Britain before calling Canada home in the 1970’s. Mary was a top-selling realtor in Calgary before retiring in the late 1980’s. Her passions were travel, playing bridge, and spending time with family. She was a grounding force and a source of inspiration to us all.
Mary will be sadly missed by family and friends. Please join us in celebrating her life at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rosedale Hospice whose staff and volunteers we thank for all their care and compassion during her stay.
