Peacefully, Mary Michalchuk, our beloved mother passed away on April 22, 2021, in Calgary, Alberta. Mary was born in Transcona, Manitoba on June 19, 1929. She was predeceased by her husband George, her parents Joseph and Sophie Fass, brothers Antonin and Walter. She is survived by her sister Alice Small, brother Alfred and their families.
In her earlier years, she was a fabulous knitter. Her sweaters had intricate cabling and she often incorporated the popcorn stitch to please her daughter. She ingeniously used plastic cocktail toothpicks to knit Barbie dresses. She was a devoted wife; being a strong advocate for her husband during his illness. Over the years they enjoyed the bounty of their large vegetable garden at their home in Transcona that was harvested each fall and almost lasted thru to the next spring. Her shortbread ‘secret family recipe’ was often sought after. In 2013, she moved from Winnipeg to be closer to her children in Calgary. Later in life, she enjoyed trips within Canada to Victoria, Whistler, the Canadian Rockies, Toronto and Niagara Falls with her daughter and son-in-law. She looked forward each year to the excitement of the Calgary Stampede and the pancake breakfasts.
She is survived by her son Matthew (Anne-Marie), her devoted daughter Carolyn (Ken) Drysdale, grandsons Daniel (Susannah), Stephen and, great-grandson Magnus; all of Calgary, Alberta.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many health care professionals over the years who cared for Mary both in Winnipeg and Calgary.
Cremation has taken place with internment to follow in accordance with our Mother’s wishes.
