June 18, 1922 – Oct 17, 2017
Mary, our much-loved mother, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, AB surrounded by her family, at the age of 95 years. Many thanks for the compassionate care in Unit 73. She is survived by her daughters Janice Ann Conklin, Myrna Lynn Schultz and Rhoda Gail Schultz, all of Calgary; grandson Jonathan Conklin and wife Yoyomi and their two wonderful sons Lew and Koen of Edmonton, AB. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband, Henry, at the age of 52. Mary was raised on a farm near Bruderheim, AB, where she walked far to school and attained 8 grades in 5 years, ironing her own dress for the first day of school. She left school when her mother died, to feed the threshing crews and cook for her father and older brothers. Her lifelong continuing education was through newspapers, books and as she often said “the school of hard knocks”. Mary spent her adult life in Edmonton raising gardens and three daughters. At the age of 53, she learned to drive and taught herself to run the family business. Her lovely singing voice was often heard in the home, where she loved to entertain family and friends with wonderful meals. We’ll always be grateful for her kindness, skills passed on, and great home cooking. Mary always smiled, laughed and was content with her life. She described herself as a “22 model”. Her last years were spent at Wentworth Manor in Calgary, where the caring staff described her as ‘always happy and smiling’ and repeatedly said they all loved her. Never wanting idle hands, she knit hundreds of beautiful scarves, there to give to all who admired them. The family will hold a celebration of Mary’s life in Edmonton around her next birthday in June. She always said her birthday is ‘when the roses bloom’. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
