Michiko also leaves her mother (Nobu Fukuda) and sister (Ryoko Okuda) in Tokyo, and extended families in Canada and Japan.
She was pre-deceased by her father, Seishiro Fukuda.
Michiko had a varied and interesting life. Growing up in Tokyo, she graduated from Aoyama Gakuin University in 1973 with a BA in English/Literature. During her summer breaks, she had the opportunity to travel around North America by Greyhound bus, with the intention of immigrating at some point. Between 1973 and 1983, she had various employment positions and spent 4 years in Houston TX, adding an Associate of Science degree from the University of Houston to her qualifications.
In 1983, Michiko immigrated to Calgary. Over the years she moved around, first to Michigan, then Houston, and back to Calgary in 1997.
Her working career included various positions in banking, government and NGOs.
Michiko led an active life, particularly skiing at Lake Louise and Nakiska in winter and golfing in summer as a long time member at Inglewood Golf Club. She was quite proud of her 3 holes in one.
She spent much time gardening and cultivated beautiful African violets.
Over the years she had many Siamese cats, but her current fur baby is Ivanka, a mischievous Devon Rex.
Michiko retained much of her Japanese culture. She studied Japanese tea ceremony for many years. In 2017, she was honoured to be part of the group that performed a tea ceremony for Japan’s Princess Ayako of Takamado during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge. Tea ceremonies also provided the opportunity to formally dress in a kimono, of which she had several. In the last few years she practiced calligraphy (Japanese characters).
She also enjoyed playing the piano, taking lessons for many years.
A special thanks to all in the medical profession – Michiko was provided excellent care and support.
In accordance with Michiko’s wishes there will not be a Memorial Service or Celebration of Life.
