Muriel Ella Lauder passed away peacefully at Mission Creek Landing in Kelowna, British Columbia, on Saturday, June 30, 2018, just two months shy of her 100th birthday.
Muriel was born in 1918, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She lived in Lake Valley, Saskatchewan, for most of her youth, then moved to Saskatoon to complete her education. She relocated to Fort Erie, Ontario and acquired a position with Fleet Aircraft Corporation during World War II. She returned to Saskatoon and attended Scott Business College and took secretarial and bookkeeping courses. Her first job was at the Hudson’s Bay in Saskatoon. She left for Calgary after a few years and got a position with British American Oil Company (BA Oil). Later, she followed her boss to Pacific Petroleum where she worked for several years.
Muriel was a founding member of the Desk and Derrick Association of North America, where she attended several conferences. She joined Toast Mistresses starting out in community work and achieving counsel chairman covering the Alberta area. Here she was awarded with the Speaker’s Competition Award. Muriel also volunteered for the Canadian Trail Riders Association as Secretary Treasurer where she met her beloved husband, Drew Lauder. Drew and Muriel were married on August 15, 1970, at Central United Church in Calgary. Their first home was in Vancouver, but moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1972 where they lived until 1987. They then relocated to Kelowna where they eventually retired.
Muriel and Drew never ceased to further their knowledge of many subjects through educational courses. During her many years in Kelowna, she was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church where she established some wonderful friendships. Her faith was very important to her.
Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Gordon Bowman; sister-in-law, Hazel Bowman; and a generation of nephews and nieces, of whom she spent a lifetime generously supporting and assisting in many ways. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Andrew (Drew) Lauder; parents, Howard and Mildred Bowman and her stepmother, Ellen; sister, Helen Lanthier (nee Bowman); as well as her brothers, Irvin and Harold Bowman.
The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of Missionwood Retirement Resort and Mission Creek Landing Residential Care Facility located in Kelowna for their care and assistance of Muriel during her stay.
