Murray is lovingly remembered by his wife, Maureen Senior of Calgary, his two children, Josh (Maggie) of Maple Ridge, BC and Cayley (Reid) and granddaughter Charlotte of Calgary. He is survived by his loving brothers, Allan (Dinah), Dwayne (Lois), and Dale (Debbie), devoted sister Dawn Knowles (Rob), and numerous nieces and nephews. Murray was recently predeceased by his sister Janice Wood (Mark). He was also predeceased by his parents John and Joyce (nee Martinson) of Regina, SK.
Murray was born in Rose Valley, SK and raised in Humboldt before moving to Regina with his family in 1965. Murray was always a sports enthusiast and loved hockey and baseball in particular. He spent much of his youth playing baseball and hockey with his brothers in Saskatchewan, and was later devoted to running the paths of Fish Creek Provincial Park. For thirty years, Murray took great enjoyment from participating in his fantasy baseball pool, the “It Ain’t Fair Baseball League,” with long-time friends. Murray turned his love of sports into a career as a talented and hard-working sports writer, first at the former Winnipeg Tribune, and later at the Calgary Herald where he covered CFL football, curling, and other sports for more than two decades.
Colleagues remember Murray (a.k.a. “Swamp Dog”) as a kind, quick-witted, and loyal friend. Murray met the love of his life, Maureen, in 1971 and they were married in February 1981. He passed away one week before their 40th wedding anniversary. Murray was immensely proud of his two children and delighted in spending time with his family and visiting old friends.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be a small memorial service for Murray on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. Extended family and friends are invited to view Murray's service virtually, (https://youtu.be/_MKCy5VukUs).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, or another charity of choice.
