In her 92nd year, Nancy Barton died peacefully in Calgary on June 3, 2014, surrounded by members of her family and caregivers.
Nancy was born in Kingston, Ontario, on June 11, 1922, to Brig. John F. and Margaret (Hemming) Preston. Left to mourn her are her children Susan (David) Schroder, Edmonton, Pamela Barton (Douglas James), Calgary and John, Victoria; granddaughters Jennifer (Derek) Brown, Hinton, Alberta, and Megan (Jacob) Blackwelder, Moab, Utah; great-grandchildren Christopher and Alexander Brown, and Olivia Blackwelder; brother Col. (Ret'd) John F. (Barbara) Preston, Victoria; brother-in-law Rev. David Torrance, Scotland; and relatives in Canada, Britain, and New Zealand. She was predeceased by her former husband Richard (Dick) Barton and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Barton) Torrance. Nancy grew up across Canada and in England, married Dick, then an RAF pilot, in 1942, and followed him to the U.K. in 1943. They returned to Canada with their daughters in 1953, first to Victoria, then Edmonton in 1954, where their son was born, and Calgary in 1961. She worked chiefly in libraries, retiring from the Dept. of Geography map collection, University of Calgary, in 1987. She volunteered for the Girl Guides of Canada for 68 years, her church, the Calgary Olympics, and Foothills Hospital library, and belonged to several genealogy societies. An avid camper and hiker with her family, Skyline Hikers, and Second Sixties, she loved travelling, playing bridge, walking her dogs, gardening, and staying in touch with family and friends in Canada and abroad.
