We were so shocked to hear this  week of Dr Louie's passing.  We want to let the family know that we will miss him and the care that he gave us.  We had started going to see him when friends of ours recommended him....no higher compliment in the dental industry.  Our hearts go out to you and we wish you comfort in the fact that he was loved and appreciated by many people.

 Can enough be said about Dr. Philip Louie?  No, because he was a person so endowed with kindness, caring and goodness; one cannot fully expand on all his wonderful qualities.  But, I will write what it is that I remember about him.

His expertise as a dentist was truly an honour to behold.  I thought it was wonderful how he put me and other family members at ease.  But then, he was so talented, because he was able to put so many different kinds of people at ease.  He welcomed you genuinely and he made you feel important.  His workmanship was beyond compare.  I truly believe he was the gentlest dentist in town when it came to the needle and freezing teeth!  As a senior, I can say this as I have gone through numerous dentists over the years.  I thanked the powers above, over fifteen years ago, that I was finally in the presence of the “perfect dentist.”  The marvels he performed in my mouth are often shown off and bragged about to others.

Above all else, Dr. Louie won the hearts of so many people because he was a wonderful human being.  I never saw or heard anything negative from Dr. Louie.  He was really interested in what you had to say.  I felt he was a kindred spirit.  He had the miraculous ability to instill confidence and calmness, and he was able to repair dentistry done by others that was not up to par.  Bless him for helping myself and my daughters in this regard.  Oftentimes, I was left with the impression that Dr. Louie was very dedicated to his family, and that truly was the most important thing to him.  

Our deepest sympathy to Dr. Louie’s family.  He was a most honourable man who leaves behind good thoughts and good deeds.  We are truly proud to have known him.

Sincere condolences to your family.  We first met Dr. Louie through Barbi Jo many years ago and although we moved to Vancouver Island eight years ago, continued to visit Phil yearly.  We will always remember his courteous manner, his friendliness, his genuine interest in our family and his generosity, sense of humour and compassion he will be greatly missed by many.

It's really odd to hear about you leaving us all behind so soon.  I'm pretty thrilled however to hear that you're in glory at the moment, so I guess we'll have to make do without you for the time being.  I remember as a kid, going to the dentist was always perceived to be scary; The fact that your office was located in the dark recesses of Southcentre (initially) didn't make it better.  Strangely enough, the face that I saw when I was quietly shaking in my boots, was a warm face that smiled at me...not what I expected at all.  It was quite an enjoyable experience.  

In many ways, I got to see you grow up as much as you got to see me grow up.  I specifically remember you asking me if I had seen the new Star Trek movie...heh...I'm always glad to see huge geeks anywhere. 

We never really shared our faith, our stories.  That's what happens when you only see a guy twice a year. 
Thanks for always being a positive, inspiring person!
My prayers are with you, your family, and all those that have had a void suddenly appear in their lives.  

To the Louies...Dr Phil has made a positive impact on a LOT of people, and he certainly deserves to be celebrated; so smile on!

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I have gone to Dr Louie for over 15 years.  I was terrified of dentists previous to my experiences with Dr Louie...he was the best dentist EVER!! My sincerest sympathies to each of you on the passing of your husband and father, Phil. The bright spot in it all was knowing that because of his faith he is home with his Lord and that we (believers)will get to see him again.  I was hoping to reaquaint with him this spring at our reunion but now  that will have to wait until heaven.  I am also a dental school classmate of Phil's -- U of A Class of 1986.  Phil was an awesome guy to hang around during those years.  Because I was also from Calgary, we often travelled back and forth together.  I had a 1972 International Scout, which was more like a tank, and Phil would often catch a ride with me on the weekends we went home.  It was great to have company on the trip and Phil was always good company.  Laid-back and sincere are probably the words I would use to describe him most. He wasn't loud or boisterous, he was quiet and genuine. I will always have fond memories of him as I trust you folks do.

Dear Louie family:  I was deeply saddened to learn of Phil's passing. Please accept my sincerest sympathies. Unfortunately I didn't find out until Jan 3rd. I am a dental school classmate of Phil's ... U of A Class of '86. Phil was a great classmate, fun, hard working, very bright and honest.  I wasn't one of his closest friends but I remember going with him a few times to an outdoor hockey rink to just skate around and shoot a few hockey pucks.  He was so easy to be with.  Later, when we graduated, I lived in Calgary for a few years. I enjoyed going to a few football games with Phil.  He would cheer for the Stamps of course and I would cheer for Edmonton!  After the game he would take me to Chinatown for a great meal! He was a gracious man whom I shall remember forever.

I'm so very sorry for your tremendous loss. I had the priviledge of working for Dr. Louie for only a short period of time but the impression he left on me will no doubt, last a lifetime.

The first time I came into Canyon Dental was for my boys' check ups. They were jumping up and down and being mischevious as little boys often do and Dr. Louie walked by smiling as I stood there helpless and mortified. He looked down at my boys, pointed at them and giggled. I liked him instantly.

When I began working there a couple of months later, I realized he was like that all the time. Always interested in others, always smiling. He wasn't just kind, he was genuine.

His love for his family was evident in the stories he would tell and the way his face lit up when he told them. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly.

All  these years later Dr. Louie became apart of me, my family and my friends smiles.  Professional,hard working, and fun!

   When I moved here in 2000, I worked as a Temp at various dental offices including Canyon Dental. The things that stood out for me about this office were: they treated us like a family,(we are a family); and the way Dr. Louie and Dr. Ronaghan operated their practice with care, generosity, integrity, and ethical moral had surpassed most dental offices I'd ever encountered. It seems as though they followed this motto, "Treat people the way you like to be treated." Because of that, I decided to come on board and now almost 9 years later I am still there and loving every moment of my days at the Canyon Dental.
   I will miss Dr. Louie dearly; his smile, laugh, jokes and his stories; golf, hockey games we attended, trips with friends and family (Dr. Louie loved vacationing in Hawaii with his family)and of course, I will miss his presence at our office outing.
   The things that were important in his life are: God, his family and work. His love for God and his family were inspirational. He was a great husband and an exceptional father, which were never once absence in his mind and his heart. They were his life and he were theirs. Whenever Dr. Louie talked about his family, he talked with such happiness, love and pride. He truly was the richest man that had ever lived.
   He has enriched my life and inspired me with moral values, by the way he cared for everyone and his love for God and family. I thank him for his insights. I will always remember him, and as long as we remember, he will forever live on in our hearts.
   I am very honored and blessed to have known such a amazing man like him. And I am sadden by the sudden called to his father's side. Even for a short period of time, he had touched my heart and many others as well. He was a great boss and family (Canyon Dental Centre family).

I am deeply saddened by the news that I have received this week and I am so sorry for your loss because it's a loss for me as well. Phil's passing touches me as if he was part of my own family and I am shedding a tear for you, him and the extended family.  

Indeed,  my father and mother always referred to Phil and Mae as part of our family and I considered them to be my cousins.  I still remember all those carefree days of play and laughter while our parents carried on playing mah jong into the late hours of the night - these are precious memories that I will never forget.

My most sincere condolences to the Louie Family. Phil was a very kind man and a wonderful client of mine for many years. I did not get to see him often, however he always made time for me when i came in and he was there. I will miss his big smile and our talks about watches.

I was proud to work and grow up with  Dr. Louie for 23 years. The out pouring of love and support is not surprising just overwhelming. A true compliment to Dr.Louie's caring kind nature. Such a wonderful father, husband, and generous boss. It will not be the same without you Phil. You will be so missed.

Phil, I'll really miss you alot at work.  We've been working together for 6 years and you were such a great boss and friend. It was always a joy to be working around you.  Your sense of humor always puts a smile on everyone's face.  Now it'll seem so lonely at the back by myself.  I really enjoyed our time working together and will forever miss that friendship we had.  You'll always be remembered.

Phil was my business partner for 25 years and I will miss him like a brother.

Some people wonder how two people of such dissimilar ethnic and cultural backgrounds could have formed such a successful union for so long. We very rarely argued about anything and it was amazing how often we would agree on both the business of dentistry and the practise of it.

I suppose I can't blame people for wondering when you consider the following:

  Phil was the son of first generation, Chinese immigrants.
  I am your basic Heinz 57, fourth generation Anglo-Canadian.
  English was Phil's second language growing up.
  English is my only language and sometimes I don't speak it so good.
  Phil's mom and dad ran a Chinese Cafe when he was a kid.
  I ran to the Chinese Cafe to buy cigarettes for my dad when I was a kid.
  Phil was a terrible golfer....

Sorry, but I had to add that. He really was awful though. I've never seen anyone hit a ball 250 yards with a pitching wedge over a green and onto a house-deck. He was a good putter though, I'll give him that.

When you think about it though, none of that background stuff really matters. Because, when you get right down to it, the reason Phil was such a great partner was the same as why he was a great husband and father. He was kind, caring and had a wicked sense of humour. 

Most of all he lived by the Golden Rule. He would never, ever treat people in a way the he didn't expect to be treated himself.

I will always admire him for that.

A great man, a tragic loss, for which we are all truly sorry.

Dear Connie, Mr. James Louie, Joshua, Cameron, Olivia, May and families, 
I, and my family, are deeply saddened by the unexpected and much too early departure of one of the most outstanding individuals I have had the privilege to know.
I literally grew up with Phil as we were childhood friends from birth. Arguably we have known each other longer than we have known anyone else (we were born only 2 weeks apart at the same hospital and our families were very close back then - the Chinese community was much smaller in 1959, as were the number of "Louies" in the city). 
Not only was Phil a relative and a friend, but also a colleague as he graduated as a DDS at the same school as I did and practiced with one of my esteemed class members, Dr. Ronaghan. 
Phil was notable for his quick and easy sense of humour and his perpetual smile. I cannot remember a time when he ever showed any frustration, anger or ever said a bad word about anyone or anything. I know this made him the  respectable person he was; even though he was younger and I was a few inches taller, I always looked up to him as if he was an older brother with a larger than life stature.
I always felt he was much more mature in his outlook and he always took life with both a sense of ease but also with a slow and steady approach. What I mean to say is that he always did his due diligence with much care and as much time and attention to detail as he was comfortable with: he was certainly bright enough to get into dentistry much earlier but instead he chose to finish his medical technician degree first, when most of his friends were getting married he took his time in finding his one true soulmate, and while most of our contemporary group of friends had kids going to college your lovely children were just entering middle and high school with a very wise mentoring father.  That is another notable trait of Phil - in his very patient way he always planned his life with deliberation and consistency - he always seemed to do things right - I have never known him to make a mistake. 
We will always remember him as the intelligent, easygoing, caring, modest, funny, charismatic, steadfast and exemplary gentleman that he truly was. His reputation as a loyal and loving son, father, husband and brother was well known. We are very sorry for your loss and we wish to convey to all of you our most heartfelt prayers and our deepest sympathies. He will be greatly missed.
