Raymond was born in Mainland China and moved to Hong Kong at a young age and he was raised until the early 1980’s, at which point in time, he immigrated to Canada under the sponsorship of the Wong family. Starting as a laborer in a Chinese kitchen, Raymond’s focus and work ethic allowed for him to educate and assimilate himself into life in Calgary. As his computer programming career was taking off, he connected with a girl from Hong Kong leading to a long-distance pen pal relationship with Priscilla who would become his wife of 36 happy years.
Raymond was uncompromising in his early vision of building a prosperous life for his family. His frugal and self-sacrificing ways paid off and he soon established a wonderful home and family life for himself, his wife, and three boys. Over time, his stoicism relaxed, though never completely, as was evidenced by the gradual emergence of his interests in gardening, playing basketball, volunteering at the Calgary Chinese Community Service Association, and the fandom of the Calgary Flames hockey team. Ever the provider, even in his final days, Raymond never stopped caring for his household, continuing to dole out instructions for scheduling house and car maintenance, cancelling subscriptions etc. to the very end. However, in the quiet moments between these preparations, he would contentedly reflect on his life. His singular goal of establishing a thriving and happy family had been met, and he was able to move on in peace.
