Sharon was born in Eston, Saskatchewan, where she attended school and began her studies in piano. Moving to Saskatoon, she completed a business course, continued her piano studies culminating in an ARCT degree in Piano Performance, and began studies in Education at the University of Saskatchewan. After a brief teaching experience in Saskatoon, Sharon moved with her husband Jerry, to Calgary, Alberta in 1961 and began her career with the Calgary Board of Education. She subsequently completed her Bachelor of Education degree, with distinction, at the University of Calgary, and continued teaching until her retirement in 1998. While Sharon enjoyed a successful teaching career, music was her passion. She excelled as an accompanist, assisting many choirs, including the Calgary Boys’ Choir, various school choirs and the Youth Singers of Calgary. She was also involved with several church and musical theatre groups and accompanied contestants at music festivals and choir competitions.
Sharon greatly enjoyed travelling, including trips to England and Wales, an excursion to Africa, complete with a safari and a tour of Egypt, and many trips to Hawaii, particularly the island of Kauai. Sharon had a special fondness for the ocean, and took many memorable trips to the Oregon coast. Jaunts to Spokane, and weekend “razzles” with colleagues in Fairmont gave Sharon fun getaways from her hectic schedule.
Reading was also a passion for Sharon; she treasured the feel of a book in her hands. She was particularly intrigued by British history as well as the evolving history of the Soviet Union, the demise of the Czars and, of course, the current war in Ukraine. Hundreds of books remain unread while still more are on her “to buy list”. Sharon had an amazing ability to recall minute details from her reading and her travels that others might not have noticed.
Sharon’s memory will be cherished by her husband of 64 years, Jerry; her sons Stephen (Sheila), Michael (Heather) and her beloved grandchildren Dustin, Connor, Stephanie, Christopher, Delaney, Jamie, Jordan Mackenzie, Jordan Marie, Michael, Isaac and Evelyn; her sister Nadine Powers; her brothers Paul Northcott (Judy), Perry (Percy) and David (Jane) Swain; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Velma and Jesse Northcott, her brother Jack Northcott as well as brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Sharon’s family wishes to extend thanks to the staff of Unit 74, Rockyview General Hospital, who treated Sharon with understanding, kindness and compassion. In particular, we are grateful for the loving counsel of Kerri Kroeker, Spiritual Health Practitioner, and the sometimes direct but always compassionate attention of Dr. Palencia, who took time from his medical explanations to chat with ‘mama’, as he affectionately called Sharon, about various matters of mutual interest, including good coffee from his native Columbia.
