Shirley Ann Marren passed away peacefully at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary on August 12, 2014 at the age of 78 years. She was born August 26, 1935 in the Rimbey Hospital, the eleventh of twelve children to Susie and Sidney Cross.
Shirley is survived by her loving daughter Wanda (Brian) Rooke; two grandchildren, Kyle (Michelle) Rooke and Lindsey (Jason) Gagnon. Mamma Marren is also survived by four great grandchildren, Georgia, Colby, Hayden and Sophie; her brother Ralph, brother-in-law Marv Grue and sisters-in-law, Irene, Isobel and Doreen as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was married in 1951 to Murray Marren who passed away in 2006 in Rocky Mountain House. She is also predeceased by her parents, Susie and Sidney, brothers Chester (a toddler), Cecil, Ray, Gordon, Fred, Harold and Ron and sisters Fay, Mary and Marj.
Shirley travelled extensively following Murray with his job. The travel with Murray was across Canada as far east as Prince Edward Island. The longer stays were in Calgary, Cessford, Wallaceburg, Rocky Mountain House and finally back to Calgary.
Gardening was an enjoyable past time for Shirley when living on the acreages with Murray. While in Calgary, the first stay, she participated in bowling leagues and often bowled in the championships.
The arrival of the grandchildren resulted in the move from Wallaceburg back to Rocky Mountain House to be closer to the family.
With the passing of Murray in 2006, Shirley moved to Calgary to be closer to Wanda and was soon to be enjoying the great grandchildren. She doted on the grandchildren and was given frequent hugs by little hands.
With the passing of Shirley a void has been left in the family, however our memories cannot be taken and we will always treasure the time spent with mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. May she rest in peace as she travelled one last time.
A Celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate) Calgary, on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so prior to service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Hospice Calgary, 1245 – 70 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2H 2X8.
Always loved, always remembered.
