With great sadness, we announce the passing of Shirley Suk Yin Poon on Friday, October 18th, 2024. She passed away at home in Calgary, Alberta surrounded by love with her three children and granddaughter next to her.
She was born in Chung Shan, Canton on 12th month 19th day, 1934 (Chinese calendar) and was the fifth born of twelve children. Her family moved to Macau at a young age and in her early life she loved travelling to Hong Kong to go dancing in nightclubs.
Shirley moved to Calgary in 1959, to marry her beloved husband Allen and there they raised three children in their North Haven home where she lived until her passing. She loved the company of people and so it was a perfect fit for her to be a cashier at the Harry Hays Building cafeteria where she could form connections with her regular customers.
Throughout her life, she had a love of playing mahjong, staying up to the early hours of the morning playing with friends and family. She also enjoyed traveling and going fishing with Allen, trips to the casino with her sister Number 6 and shopping with her sister Lena.
Above all else, she loved her family and spending time with them, being the anchor of the family. A gracious host, her home was filled with countless family gatherings, both formal and every day.
Shirley was a gentle, caring and loving person who had a fun-loving side and she will be dearly missed.
Shirley is survived by her three children; Carol (Daniel), Janine, and Allen John (Ilinca); her four grandchildren Solomon, Victoria, Logan, and Kallen; and her siblings Charles (Lolo), Lena (Clement) and Helen (Kelvin) and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Allen, her parents and many brothers and sisters.
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, October 28th, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Shirley will be laid to rest beside her husband at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
