It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Vine after a courageous battle with cancer. Shirley was predeceased by her parents Albert & Emma Hackett, her brother Tom Hackett and Shirley’s son Joel Curtis Vine. Shirley is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Michael (Margaret), David, Aaron (Diane) Leon, and daughter in law, Marilyn, as well as 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Shirley had a great zest for life and ventured out to be the Queen of her Castle. She took pride in her Kostelnik and Hackett roots and loved everyone in these families. Early in her youth Shirley loved to sing and recorded a wonderful version of “Over the Rainbow” with Dorothy Cameron playing piano. Shirley had a wonderful voice and would sing in full voice to her favorite records as her children came home from school.
She grew up in Lethbridge raising her 5 boys there for several years before moving to Edmonton in 1967. In 1977 Shirley moved to Olds, Alberta where she opened Vine’s Pizza, running the business for almost 20 years. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas and was well know for the GIANT Christmas tree she would endlessly decorate to a glass of wine in her restaurant.
Shirley was also active in the Olds business community and served as town councilor for the Town of Olds. Her other love was flowers and later moved to Calgary to open her flower shop where she operated that until she retired.
All through Shirley’s life she loved to travel and ventured off whenever she had the opportunity. She would love to immerse herself in the different cultures and one of her favorite trips was to Thailand. Her home was filled with bobbles from her journeys.
Shirley was a woman of accomplishment, free spirited, and an entrepreneur. With that said the pride of her accomplishments was raising her 5 boys, each one being her favorite and she delivered that love so unselfishly. She will be missed deeply by all those that had the pleasure of knowing her, but especially her sons. She is in our hearts forever. Thank you Mom.
We would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at the Southwood Hospice for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Shirley’s life will be held in Lethbridge in the New Year. Information to follow. Contact Aaron at [email protected] if you would like to be notified. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family in the Guest Book section found adjacent to this obituary.
