Stephen Kwaku Kumi Junior was born on February 14, 1984, in Sunyani, Ghana – within the Brong Ahafo Region. His parents were the late Mr. Stephen Kumi Senior and Madam Comfort Tabiri.
He was named directly after his father with blessings from both parent’s families. He was nicknamed Gyengyen by his siblings when he during his childhood.
Stephen began his elementary education at St. Mary’s school and further completed his junior school at Sunyani Roman Catholic. He continued at Twene Amanfo senior secondary school. His favorite sport to play was soccer. He was so good that he later became the goalkeeper for the school’s soccer team.
Kwaku immigrated to Canada with his mother and siblings in 2003. They first settled in Toronto and moved to Calgary in 2005. During his time in Calgary, he worked at Winroc now called FBM (foundation building materials) from 2007 to 2018 and at Kenroc from 2019 to 2020. He was remembered for his hard work dedication within both positions.
As we gather to say our final goodbyes, we have so many memories we hold dear to us that highlight how good of a person he was. His warmth, kindness, and infectious enthusiasm for life was evident in everything he did, whether it was thoughtful words, gentle touch or endless acts of kindness. One of the things we admire most was his dedication to his family and friends.
Kwaku, carry these few token words in your wallet to always remember you hold a special piece of your hearts forever.
Stephen is survived by his two daughters, Stella Serwaa Kumi in Ghana and Olivia Adwoa Kumi in Calgary, Canada.
To my siblings and his daughters, let us carry his legacy by embracing kindness, compassion and resilience in our lives.
Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us.
