May 12, 1921 – January 8, 2013
Thelma passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, a beautiful, sunny day with bright blue skies, at 91 years of age. Thelma was born in Birch Hills, SK and was welcomed home by her mom, dad and her two older sisters, who all have predeceased her. After graduating from high school, she attended Holy Family’s School of Nursing in Prince Albert, SK. Immediately after graduating on September 7, 1943, Thelma was actively pursued by a doctor here in Alberta to practice her profession in Calgary. On December 20, 1944 she moved here and joined the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses. Thelma met and married John (Jack) Cornwell and lived together in Calgary until his passing in July of 1985. Thelma loved to tell the story about her being the youngest girl on an all girls hockey team. Who would have imagined this of her! Thelma is remembered for her charitable work, particular in participating in the beginning of Calgary Meals on Wheels by helping to cook meals for the elderly and in her last few years she ended up on the receiving end of these meals. She loved to cook and host numerous dinners, played bridge, sewed, knitted and had numerous other hobbies. Thelma fondly remembered joining her many friends traveling together. She became a member of Varsity Acres Community Association and donated one of her many yummy recipes to the community cookbook. Thelma joined Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church in 1994 where she loved to hear the sound of the organ playing and enjoyed the camaraderie that was offered by its members. Thelma always spoke highly of her friends and neighbours in Horizon Village and loved living there. She also fondly remembered the assistance she received from certain individuals who were there to the end. Thank you for your care! Thelma, we will miss you!!!! A Celebration of Thelma’s Life will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church, 4612 Varsity Drive, N.W., Calgary, AB on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Robert Smith officiating. Interment is to follow at Queens Park Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
