Thomas Yip

September 16, 1931May 19, 2020

Thomas Yip, born September 16, 1931 in Hoi Ping China, died peacefully at home in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

Thomas was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who is survived by his wife Diane; son Bruce (Jocelyn) with grandson Xander; son Lance; daughter Betty (Jody) with granddaughter Christina and grandson Adam; son Neal (Tiffiny) with grandson Heaton and granddaughter Sloan. He was predeceased by his older sister Mei Wai.

In 1950 at the age of nineteen, Thomas came to Canada to start his adult life and to make a better life. He eventually met his beautiful wife-to-be Diane and they were married in 1958. Later that same year he was also able to sponsor his mother to come to Canada from China. With hard work and perseverance he and Diane owned and successfully ran Tom’s Food Store and along the way they produced four children and eventually five grandchildren. He never forgot his roots and always kept in touch with his village in China. Thomas was a kind and generous man who worked very hard, never took anything for granted and sacrificed so much (with Diane) to provide for his family. He loved watching NFL, heavy weight boxing, enjoyed cars, music and travel. But his real love was his family. Family meals, family pictures (‘take another in case the first one doesn’t turn out”) and family vacations were his favourite past times. Thomas had a rich and fulfilling life and will be so dearly missed.

Sincere thanks and gratitude to his caregivers whose assistance and support during the last few months at home meant a lot to the family.

Mr Yip was such a great family man. He especially loved his Grandchildren. He was generous, kind and gentle. We were blessed to have known him and to have shared in many of his family events especially those with his Grandchildren. Mr. Yip’s Service was especially touching and reflected the the love he gave his family. Who can forget his big smile. We are so sorry for your Family’s loss and and wish you peace and love.

It was a short but sweet wonderful time spent caring for Uncle Tom, as I took the privilege of calling him uncle. We hit it right on from the start for both liking boxing. He was always cheerful and his kindness was evident in every way. To Aunt Dianne, Bruce, Betty, Lance and Neil, your Dad will forever be remembered, and may his beautiful memories give you comfort and peace.

Our condolences to the whole family with our love and prayers,

Anthony and Koli

As a child I have fond memories of family dinners at the Yip house and Uncle Tom’s love of automobiles. He was very much respected by both my parents and siblings. Jeannie and I remember him as a generous man who was a quiet, gentle and kind soul. Love to all of you from Gary, Jeannie, Mai Lan, Kieran, Brennan and families.

Dear cousins,
With a heavy heart, please accept my condolences and thoughts and prayers to you all and your families.
I do fondly remember sharing some great dinners and times with you all so long ago.
Uncle Thomas was ALWAYS happy, laughing and smiling. He always brightened up any room he was in.
Even if we don’t keep in touch; please know that the memories we all shared will always remain forever in our hearts.
Please take care of mom and each other.
Love, Melissa and family

I offer my condolences to your whole family. I moved into the house at 1509 - 14 ave sw in 1987 , that is when I met Tom. He was a very generous and fair man. I lived in that house for over 26 years. Tom told me that as long as I lived there the rent would not increase, I tested him on that , staying 26 years. The rent did go up , but not as much as it should have. Tom was "ONE OF A KIND". I am very saddened and will not ever forget Tom. I wish the best for your mom and family.
