

Verna Jeanetta Flynn passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Bethany Care Lodge in Calgary, AB on March 14, 2011 at the age of 96 years. Verna was born on November 17, 1914 at Ernfold, SK, the second eldest of seven children born to John and Eunice Watson (Welsh). Verna graduated from high school and Normal (Teaching) School in Moose Jaw, SK. She taught at various one room rural schools in southern SK during the 1930s before moving to Trail, BC. During World War II, she worked as office manager for a firm on the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, B.C. There she met Francis Flynn, whom she married on March 23, 1943 in Hartford, WA. After the war they lived in Everett, WA before returning to Ernfold in 1949. They operated the Coffee Car in Ernfold from 1950 to 1952. They moved to Strathmore, AB where they operated Flynns Esso Service and Lunch Counter from 1952 to 1958. From 1958 to 1969 they operated a UFA agency in Strathmore. Verna resumed her teaching career in Strathmore. They moved to Calgary in 1971. Verna continued to teach with the Calgary Board of Education. She was a devout Christian who held various positions in the Strathmore United Church and St. Davids United Church in Calgary. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Francis and Verna travelled frequently to all fifty of the United States, Canada, Cuba and Mexico. After Francis death she travelled several times throughout Europe, Turkey, Egypt and Israel. She epitomized the Good Samaritan, opening her heart and home to family, friends and strangers. She loved to regale her audiences with curious stories of her life experiences. She dearly loved her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Verna did not fear death. She welcomed the opportunity to consummate her Christian sojourn. Verna is lovingly remembered by her sisters Audrey Hanson of Lethbridge, AB, Edythe Brownridge of Prince George, BC, Eunice Hopkins of Leader, SK; her brother Ronald Watson of Portland, Oregon; three nieces; three nephews; eight grandnephews; and three grandnieces. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Francis on March 20, 1974. A Celebration of Life will be held at FOSTER"S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen"s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen"s Park Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.
