

Walter was born to John and Betty (Ostafichuk) Dowan in Wayne, Alberta, February 2, 1933 and baptized in St. Anthony’s Church, Drumheller, August 21, 1959.
After graduating from Crescent Heights High School, Walter studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, (proficiency in saxophone and clarinet); St. Anthony’s College, Edmonton (Philosophy of Arts); University of Portland, Oregon, (BA, MA); Renssellear Polytechnic Institute, (MSc). Walter also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Aircraftsman First Class 1958-1959.
Walter and Lee met in 1966 and were married in 1968. They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in August 17, 2021. Together they raised 2 daughters.
Walter was an English instructor at SAIT for 28 years before he found his dream job at the Hamptons Golf Club. Being an avid golfer for many years it was here he enjoyed many Calgary sunrises and solitude time while mowing fairways. Walter’s many interests included playing clarinet and sax, hockey, poker, curling, and golfing.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Lee, sons Bruce and Alex, and daughters LeeAnna and Jeannette. He was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be missed.
