It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, and nana, Cheryl, on March 8th 2026.
Predeceased by her sister Terri and brother Robert and parents Florence and Robert.
Beloved sister to Brad (Lois) and sister-in-law Lynda, wife to Jim, mother to Anne (Lorenzo), Maggie (Mark), Monica and Julie (Cedric) and nana to Emebet, Isayas, Teibe, Liliane, Giovanni, Benedetta and Huxley, Cheryl was known for her warmth, welcoming spirit and keen sense of humour.
A gifted life-long teacher, Cheryl was passionate about teaching literacy to children and adults alike. While growing up, her daughters benefitted from her avid curiosity and commitment to learning. Her decision to send them to the Francophone school set them on a course to learning French that has also shaped the lives of her seven grandchildren.
Cheryl had an adventurous spirit and was an intrepid traveler: from a trip to Europe with her own mom when she was in her early 20’s to later travel with Jim and her daughters to Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Italy and France. And many, many trips to Newfoundland, Quebec and Washington DC. Cheryl also passed on her love of nature to her children. She could be found walking or biking along the trails of the Grand River weekly and enjoyed birdwatching and cross-country skiing with friends and family. With too many interests to list, including square dancing, the choir at St. Clements church, quilting, and canoeing, Cheryl contributed much to the communities she was a part of.
A stroke in 2024 slowed her down a little but made her even more grateful for her friends and family and the care she received from the stroke unit at Hamilton General Hospital and the Freeport campus of the Grand River Hospital. Cheryl will be missed among the shops, cafés and trails of downtown Preston and Galt where she loved to browse and chat.
Visitation will be held on Friday March 13th from 5-8pm at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, and the funeral will be held at St. Clement’s Church, 745 Duke St, at 11am on Saturday March 14th.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Mark Preece House in Hamilton. https://markpreecehouse.ca/donate/
