Rita Geraldine “Gerry” Kergoat (nee McDevitt) was born in Shediac, New Brunswick, the youngest of six children, Fr. Anthony, Eloise, Edgar, Eleanor “Micky," and Mary. Gerry was the last surviving sibling.
Gerry and Ray met and courted in Shediac and were both happy there. They married in 1950, and due to Ray’s naval career, they travelled extensively. Their nomadic lifestyle carried them to Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Upon retirement, they spent 3 years in Spain as well. Gerry and Ray had four daughters, Catherine, Suzanne, Janet and Emily. They were also blessed with grandchildren Arthur and Andrew, Alexander, Bartholomew and Rosanna, William, Sol and Eowyn. Great-grandchildren Maille and Francoise, Martita, Sunset and Autumn, Abigail, Xavier, Hadyn, Kaleb and Oliver, Cohen and Lennon followed. Gerry suffered from dementia and for the past 7 years, unable to recognize family members, the staff at Golden Years Nursing Home became her family. They have many fond memories of her positive attitude. Their kindness and care of Gerry are greatly appreciated by all of us. In her younger years, Gerry had a busy life and was actively involved with community groups no matter where we were living. She always missed her family home, and spoke fondly of her childhood. For that reason, her ashes will be interred in the cemetery of St Joseph’s Parish Church in Shediac, with her beloved husband and greatly missed parents. As per Gerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will not be a service at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
