Gerry was devoted to his family and public service. In 1965, he married the love of his life, Christine Cheetham (deceased). He was a loving father to Ivan, Andrew, Kirsten and Seth. He adored his granddaughters Amber and Freya. His large and loving extended family including his siblings, Robert and Rosemary, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and nephews and nieces, all of whom, along with his numerous friends and colleagues, will miss his humour and passion for life.
Born in Toronto, he was raised by his Ukrainian parents Timko and Helen (deceased). After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1962, he started his career in Toronto before moving to Cambridge where he practiced law for over 25 years. In 1968, he was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Counsel designation.
Gerry held public office as an Alderman, School Trustee, and Chair of Waterloo Police Commission. In 1995, he was elected a Member of Provincial Parliament for Cambridge and served for 4 terms spanning 16 years. He was dedicated to serving the people of Cambridge.
Visitation will take place at Barthel Funeral Home (566 Queenston Rd, Cambridge N3H 3J8) on Friday, May 12 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The funeral will take place at Trinity Anglican Church (12 Blair Road Cambridge N1S 2N5) on Saturday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
