As you think of your husband, dad and grandpa, may you always remember the kindness that he always showed at church to those around him.  I appreciate the gentleman manner in which he talked as it reminded me of my father.  He was kind of like a father when my dad was out of town.  
May you always hold his memories close to your hearts.

I recently heard of Mr Janzen's death and extend these belated sympathies. Mr Janzen was my homeroom teacher in his first year teaching at J.E Benson. I particularly recall his encouragement as we wrote creative "paragraphs" and how he allowed us to hold candy sales to raise money for the Red Cross(during class hours!). A kind and gentle teacher remembered after these 60 plus  years.

His quiet dignity, humour and openness was appreciated and Dr. Janzen was  the epitome of a "gentleman." I had him for several courses and will remember him with great respect and affection.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Mary, Paul, Cathy, Brent, Lauren, and Joshua on the loss of their wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. My memories of Henry date back to my student days at the University of Windsor, where I had the privilege of studying under him as an undergraduate and the even greater privilege of having him as a mentor when I was his teaching assistant the year I completed my M.A. in English. The helpful instruction he so patiently gave me that memorable year on improving one's lectures from class to class and on marking thoroughly and fairly have guided me as a university teacher from that time to this, as has his stellar example. I can still recall how carefully Henry would choose his words and how precisely he would enunciate them, often in witty remarks delivered with a twinkle in his eye and with a perfect sense of comic timing.    

The hospitality that first I alone and then both my husband Patrick and I enjoyed at the Janzen home is also something for which we will always be grateful. The warmth that Henry and Mary, together with their remarkable children Cathy and Paul, extended to visitors remains one of our fondest memories. That family was and continues be an inspiration to us. 

We have kept regularly in touch with Henry and Mary over the years, celebrating the happy moments together and commiserating each other over the sad ones, Henry's death being one of the very saddest. As Mary mentioned to me in a recent email, however, Henry was looking forward soon to being, in his words, in "the glorious presence of God." We rejoice to think of him there, but will miss him very much here, where he remains, in memory and in our hearts, a gifted, highly esteemed professor, a generous and much admired mentor, and a deeply cherished friend.

Henry was my colleague and office neighbour for years at the University. We cannot believe he has gone. Henry was unchanging - he beamed upon all of us with the purest kindness and goodwill.  Truly one of the loveliest people I have known, in every sense of that word.  I know he is now living in the light and fulness of that same love, and is near to you all in our Lord. All blessings and comfort to you, dear Mary, Cathy, and Paul.

I had Dr. Janzen for a number of English courses at the University of Windsor. He was one of my favourite professors.He instilled in me a deeper love and appreciation of Shakespeare and a deeper awareness of and  wonder at the power of words. His calm demeanor and welcoming manner meant he was one of the few profs of whom I felt both comfortable enough to ask questions, and to visit during office hours. He was an example of what a good person is; I have thought of him often throughout the years. He will be missed.

Dear Mary, Catherine and Paul
I remember fondly teaching next door to Henry as he began his teaching career at J. E. Benson School in 1953.
I remember enjoying lunch time on the days that Henry would bring the borsch(?) that his mother had sent with him.

I am so saddened to hear your husband, father and grandfather has passed away.  I saw that he was a wonderful grandparent to Lauren and Josh, and a supportive father to Cathy and Brent.  I also saw the gentle ways he had with you, Mary always showing his love for you.
He will be missed at First Mennonite on those front benches.
