Our incredible Dad, Orlaf Stanley Glynn, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11th, one week shy of his 90th birthday. Originally from Simcoe, Ontario, Orlaf and his wife Kathryn moved to Preston in 1957 and settled into a new home to raise their children. Orlaf always prioritized the happiness and well-being of his young family—they were his everything and that love provided a lifelong grounding and closeness that he was fiercely proud of.
An entrepreneur who owned an industrial paint and silicone business primarily serving Waterloo region’s Mennonite community, he finally retired at age 80—our Dad possessed an energy that amazed. Beyond his work, he stayed active in youth sports coaching minor hockey, hardball and serving on Preston’s Junior B Raider’s Executive Board for several years. A prolific storyteller, with a tremendous sense of humor, Orlaf always recognized the funny side and instilled in us to not take life, or ourselves, too seriously.
Married 69 years, he is survived by the love of his life, Kay, his four children Stan, (Bonnie), Marcia, Scott (Joan) and Lori (Bruce), 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. To Orlaf, a strong and loving family was, in the words of Bernard Shaw, “an earlier heaven,” and he told us just how happy he was before he passed—the ultimate final gift.
Services will be held in Preston at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge (519-653-3251) on Sunday, June 18, 2023 (what would’ve been Orlaf’s 90th birthday), with Visitation from 12:00-2:00 pm, followed by a short service at St. John’s Anglican Church, 567 Queenston Road at 2 pm; with a reception back at Barthel’s immediately following.
As a tribute to our father, any donation to the Mennonite Central Committee Ontario at Mcccanada.ca would be appreciated.
We’ll miss you Dad—your happy family carries on.
