I became acquainted with Dan over 3 brief visits to the Watiqua Fishing Camp where he was employed as a guide. The most recent in early July, 2019. I'm a novice fisherman and relied heavily on his expert guidance, good humour, and entertaining stories. I found him to be a thoughtful, gentle man and soon discovered we had a common interest in music, specifically playing guitar. I listened to him play outside the cook shed one morning on my Seagull. He was an accomplished player and still practicing; proud of his collection of instruments. He liked the Seagull. On the day we left camp he drew me a few diagrams of picking patterns he was studying, and recommended some musicians including Bukka White, Justin Johnson, and Deep South. He gave me his Ocarina. In return I made a little pencil sketch of Dan and wrote out the words of a song I penned for the trip called "Mighty River Blues". This verse is dedicated to Dan:
"The air is still, there’s an eagle on the fly
It circles and calls but only she knows why
Mighty river, Mighty river, Mighty sky
I’m standing in this water, oh me, oh my.
I'm standing in this water, oh me, oh my."
