Eleanor Gideon Basque

Passed away at the Matapedia CHSLD on Wednesday, August 07, 2024, at the age of 91, Mrs. Eleanor Gideon of Listuguj, wife of the late Lawrence Anthony Basque. Eleanor was born on October 9, 1932, in Gespe'gewa'gi to the late Thomas Gideon and Margaret Dedam.

Eleanor is known for her compassion, work ethic, and selflessness. Her deep-seated passion for caring for others professionally began with her nursing career in the 1950s in Manhattan, New York City. On May 5, 1959, Eleanor Gideon and Lawrence Basque were joined in marriage. On June 21, 1959, they started their family in Connecticut with the birth of their first child and only daughter, Susan. Over the next ten years, Eleanor’s family would grow to 5 children with the births of Larry, Tim, Richard, and Jeff.

As matriarch of the family, Eleanor put her family first, instilling in them the values she cultivated from her upbringing of hard-working Mi’gmaq parents. She worked professionally as a registered nurse until her retirement in 1992. Her passions were reading, gardening, knitting, picking wild berries, and baking the best strawberry shortcake in the world.

Eleanor is survived by her children Susan, Larry, Richard, and Jeff and by many nephews and grandchildren: Sky, Casey, Steven, Erik, Charles, Gawi, and Keaton. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by Lawrence and her son, Tim.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Maher's Funeral Chapel at 64 Lansdowne St. in Campbellton, New Brunswick. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. A viewing will be 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM, Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Maher's Funeral Home, 33 Lansdowne St. in Campbellton, New Brunswick.
