Gerald served in the Korean War as a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, from November 1953 to November 1956 for which he received the Nato Medal. As his father and brothers, Gerald worked for the Canadian National Railway. First as an engineer, then as a Master Mechanic from 1949 to 1987. From 1987 to 1993 he served as Trainmaster for VIA Rail.
He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as a jokester with a great sense of humour, a man of boundless generosity and a tireless fisherman whose talent catching fish was only surpassed by his enthusiasm.
