I learned you passed while I was at a conference where Aboriginal and treaty rights were being discussed. I don't think it was a coincidence that I was in that room at that particular moment in time.
Cree hunters and trappers were being recognized for the integral role they played in proving their people's connection to the land. They continue the practices of their ancestors and their testimony in court helped get their nation's Aboriginal and treaty rights recognized. The court didn't grant them rights. The court finally recognized their rights. 
You were in that room at that exact moment ... on my mind and in my heart. 
You did the same for the  Mi'gmaq. I am forever indebted to you for continuing to hunt and fish at a time where such activities were prohibited by law. You always believed that the Mi'gmaq had the right to fish and hunt. Without the collective effort of hunters and fishermen like you, that continued to challenge the laws until our Aboriginal and Treaty rights were finally recognized, we wouldn't be enjoying the rights and benefits we have today. I realize that  you didn't do it alone, I know your immediate family also sacrificed. I owe a debt of gratitude to them too.
i will teach my children and my future grandchildren about the sacrifices and the struggles. I am grateful that I got to witness history in the making.
