Roméo was born in Campbellton on January 26th, 1940. The 3rd of 9 children to Edna and Fred Parent.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Leona (Vermette) Parent, his 2 daughters: Suzanne (Donald) Landry, step-grand-children David and Danielle and their families; Nicole (Brian) Harper and proud grand-father to Tyler Harper of Dieppe. He will also be missed by his sisters: Jeannette Irvine, Rosalie Savoie of Campbellton, Louisette Bujold of St-Arthur and Marguerite Parent of Dieppe and his brother Louis (Jeannine) Parent of Dieppe, as well as brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He started his work life in The Canadian Armed Forces from 1957 to 1960. His career and hobbies where all intertwined and all had one major objective and that was to save lives. For a living, he worked at the Restigouche Hospital Centre for 35 years in various positions: as a psychiatric assistant 1 & 2, as an occupational therapy 3rd level assistant, a 2nd level recreational leader, then as a fire prevention safety officer and in charge of security, including switchboard receptionnists, as well as CPR and First Aid trainer.
He joined St-John Ambulance in 1960 and became superintendent for the division in 1973. In 1975, Roméo`s efforts resulted in his being named as a Serving Brother of the Order of St-John. In 1978, he was named as the Officer of the Year for the St-John Ambulance of NB. In 1980 he was promoted to Officer Brother. In 1991, he received one of the highest honors conferred by the order of St-John Ambulance for his 30 years of outstanding service ‘’Commander Brother of the Order of St-John Ambulance’’. He successfully completed Instructor courses in CPR and First Aid. He was also a casualty simulator.
Roméo joined the Campbellton Fire Brigade in 1974 and in 1978 was named Captain of Company 1. The following year he was appointed captain of the aerial company and in no time at all was brigade chief, 2nd in command. Over the years he completed many courses in firefighting and in 1981 was appointed training officer. He also completed level 1 & 2 in firefighting and was often called upon to conduct sessions at various fire departments and finally went on to be the Restigouche regional examiner.
In 2003, for the 1st time in the 19-year history of the NB Fire Fighter Hall of Flame, a man from Campbellton (Roméo) was chosen to receive the award. He received the distinction in an induction ceremony on May 17th in Caraquet. He was also honored by the City of Campbellton in June of the same year.
As you can see, Roméo was a very dedicated Volunteer. He was respected by all who knew him because he was a strong leader and would not expect anything from anyone that he would not do himself. It was often said around the firestation that he slept with one leg on the floor in readiness for a call. He was very well known by all the Bingo players as the fire department Bingo caller.
He was also a member of The Knights of Columbus, The Our Lady of Snow Church Parish Guard and St-Louis Lane Seniors Club, where he and his wife, Leona where honored with the volunteer couple of the year 2019. He was a faithful blood donor with over 100 donations and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for several years and so much more that could not be mentioned.
He was predeceased by his son, Denis, in 1983, his sister Germaine, his brothers: Michel, Raymond, Armand, George and Ernest, as well as his parents.
The family would like to express their immense gratitude to the Extra-Mural Program, the Campbellton Regional Hospital Surgical, Geriatric and Transition departments. A special Thank You to Dr. Sylvie Katanda for her special attention to this couple’s needs, as well as Father Romeo Morrison, for his kind words and support. A Big Thank You to the many angels in Palliative care.
Funeral mass will be held at the Our-Lady-of-Snow's Church in Campbellton, Thursday August 20th, 2020 at 2:00 pm.

Nous sommes tristes d'annoncer le décès de Roméo Parent, 80 ans, le mercredi 29 avril 2020 à l'Hôpital régional de Campbellton, avec sa tendre épouse à ses côtés.
Roméo est né à Campbellton le 26 janvier 1940. Le 3ème de 9 enfants d'Edna et Fred Parent.
Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse de près de 60 ans Léona (Vermette) Parent, ses 2 filles: Suzanne (Donald) Landry, les beaux-petits-enfants David et Danielle et leur famille; Nicole (Brian) Harper et fier grand-père de Tyler Harper de Dieppe. Il manquera également à ses sœurs: Jeannette Irvine, Rosalie Savoie de Campbellton, Louisette Bujold de St-Arthur et Marguerite Parent de Dieppe et son frère Louis (Jeannine) Parent de Dieppe, ainsi que ses beaux-frères, belles-soeurs et plusieurs nièces et neveux.
Il a commencé sa vie professionnelle dans les Forces armées canadiennes de 1957 à 1960. Sa carrière et ses passe-temps où tous s'entremêlaient et avaient tous un objectif majeur étant de sauver des vies. Pour gagner sa vie, il a travaillé au Centre hospitalier Restigouche pendant 35 ans dans divers postes: comme assistant psychiatrique 1 & 2, comme assistant ergothérapeute de 3e niveau, animateur récréatif de 2e niveau, puis comme responsable de la sécurité incendie et responsable de sécurité, y compris les réceptionnistes du standard, ainsi que formateur de RCR et en premiers soins.
Il s'est joint à l'Ambulance Saint-Jean en 1960 et est devenu directeur de la division en 1973. En 1975, les efforts de Roméo lui ont valu d'être nommé frère en service de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean. En 1978, il a été nommé officier de l'année pour l'Ambulance Saint-Jean du Nouveau-Brunswick. En 1980, il a été promu officier frère. En 1991, il a reçu l’une des plus hautes distinctions décernées par l’Ordre de l’Ambulance Saint-Jean pour ses 30 années de service exceptionnel «Commandant Frère de l’Ordre de l’Ambulance Saint-Jean» Il a suivi avec succès des cours d'instructeur en RCR et en premiers soins. Il était également un simulateur de blessés.
Roméo s'est joint à la Brigade des pompiers de Campbellton en 1974 et en 1978, il a été nommé capitaine de la compagnie 1. L'année suivante, il a été nommé capitaine de la compagnie aérienne et en peu de temps, il a été chef de brigade, 2e commandant. Au fil des ans, il a suivi de nombreux cours de lutte contre les incendies et, en 1981, a été nommé responsable de la formation. Il a également complété les niveaux 1 et 2 en lutte contre les incendies et a souvent été appelé à diriger des séances dans divers services d'incendie et a finalement été examinateur régional du Restigouche.
En 2003, pour la première fois en 19 ans d'histoire du Temple de la flamme des pompiers du NB, un homme de Campbellton (Roméo) a été choisi pour recevoir le prix. Il a reçu la distinction lors d'une cérémonie d'intronisation le 17 mai à Caraquet. Il a également été honoré par la ville de Campbellton en juin de la même année.
Comme vous pouvez le voir, Roméo était un Volontaire très dévoué. Il était respecté par tous ceux qui le connaissaient car il était un leader fort et n'attendrait rien de quiconque qu'il ne ferait pas lui-même. On a souvent dit autour de la caserne qu'il dormait avec une jambe par terre en prévision d'un appel. Il était très bien connu de tous les joueurs de Bingo en tant qu'appeleur au Bingo des pompiers.
Il était également membre des Chevaliers de Colomb, de la garde paroissiale de l'église Notre-Dame-des-Neiges et du Club d’Âge d’Or St-Louis Lane, où lui et son épouse, Léona, furent honorés comme couple de bénévoles de l'année 2019. Il était un fidèle donateur de sang, avec plus de 100 dons. Il s'est porté volontaire pour la Popote roulante pendant plusieurs années et bien plus encore qui n'a pas pu être mentionné.
Il a été prédécédé par son fils, Denis, en 1983, sa sœur Germaine, ses frères: Michel, Raymond, Armand, George et Ernest, ainsi que ses parents.
La famille tient à exprimer son immense gratitude au Programme Extra-Mural , aux services de chirurgie, de gériatrie et de transition de l'Hôpital régional de Campbellton. Un merci spécial à Dre Sylvie Katanda pour son attention particulière aux besoins de ce couple, ainsi qu'au Père Roméo Morisson, pour ses aimables paroles et son soutien. Un Grand Merci aux nombreux anges des soins palliatifs.
Funérailles auront lieu en l'église Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, Campbellton, jeudi le 20 août, 2020 à 14h00. En raison des restrictions de Covid-19, l'Église vont accepter un maximum de 92 personnes, donc pour assister aux funérailles, vous devez appeler au bureau de l'église et vous inscrire au 506-753-4232
