Ruth was the youngest of six children and was predeceased by her parents, Sarah (McDavid) and George Bulmer, and siblings Jetta Kloepfer, Elizabeth (Beth) Murray, Alexina (Exie) Delaney, Helen Daley, Howard (Buddy) Bulmer, and her dear partner, Pam Stewart. Her memory will be cherished by many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.
Ruth grew up in Flatlands and graduated from the Campbellton Composite High School in 1947. She attended Dalhousie University and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. She worked in Halifax for several years after graduation, but when her mother had a leg amputation, she returned home to help care for her. She was employed for the remainder of her career at lab facilities in Campbellton, the latter part as Director of Laboratory Services at the Campbellton Regional Hospital. In 1970-71, she attended the University of Toronto, graduating with a Diploma in Bacteriology. She was a true believer in lifelong learning.
Ruth was a fervent feminist who was an avid supporter of women’s rights and gender equity. She was an active member in her community and served on the local service district board for several years. She served on the Board of Aids NB when it was first founded, was an enthusiastic member of the local Naturalist Society, and a long-time supporter of Jeunesse Musicale. She appreciated art and music, and both were a significant part of her life. She was a bird and animal lover. Her faithful companion, Bella, was a significant presence in her life. She was a faithful CBC listener and supporter. She was a voracious reader who had a fine collection of literature on her Kobo Reader. She was a generous donor to many humanitarian organizations and social causes. She was recently honoured as a 50-year donor to Dalhousie University.
Ruth was also involved in sports most of her life. She was a member of the women’s hockey team at Dalhousie University, enjoyed snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, curling and cycling. She was a world traveller and visited numerous countries on all continents.
Up until her death, she was an active bridge player, an opinionated member of a book club, and a faithful attendee of local concerts and art exhibitions. She went out walking almost every day, regardless of the weather and compared her steps on her Fitbit to those in her company. She followed intently every tennis tournament and curling bonspiel on TV. She prided herself on her ability to drive her car and live independently in her own home. She hosted a regular Sunday night dinner (always with a glass of good red wine) and offered a bed to any family member visiting. She disliked the current technology but begrudgingly carried a cell phone, did online banking, plus occasionally shopping. She was a well-informed conversationalist and loved a feisty political discussion.
