Cecil, affectedly known as “Bubba” to his three doting sisters, was a lifelong Carrollton/Coppell, TX resident, and the eldest and only son in the family. He graduated from R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton in 1966 with a football scholarship to Texas Tech University. He selflessly left college following his father’s sudden passing in 1967 to look after his mother and sisters.
He dedicated a decade of service to the City of Dallas Public Works Department. Later he teamed up at private firms with former co-workers, eventually retiring as a civil engineer for Nathan D. Maier Consulting Engineers, Inc. in 2014. Serving as the steady anchor for his family, cousins and friends, Cecil will be remembered for his wry sense of humor and adventurous spirit. He loved playing darts, earned his private pilot’s license, and always looked forward to trips to Winstar Casino. You could usually find him Sundays at Daddy Rabbit’s Pub in Lewisville cheering on his Cowboys.
Cecil was an avid outdoorsman and tracker, logging an incredible 4000 miles on his daily walks, while capturing wonderful photos of local birds and wildlife to share with his family and friends. He was deeply dedicated to preserving history, actively contributing to the Coppell Historical Museum, the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center, and serving as a board member for the Texas Czech Genealogical Society. He meticulously traced the lineage of his extensive Czech family (the Dobeckas and Cervenkas) showcasing his research at the biennial family reunions in Dubina, Texas. His interest in genealogy not only covered his Czech family, but he also helped many others trace their family lineage.
He is pre-deceased by his father Cecil J. Dobecka, Sr. and his mother Mary Cervenka-Dobecka Cockrell. Cecil is survived by his sisters, Shirley (David) Caesar, Pamela (Troy) Hamm, Paula (Garry) Monk; nephews Jason (Reina) Hamm, Bryan (Katie) Hamm, Justin (Patchin) Crawford, Joshua (Alexandra) Crawford, and his seven great-nieces and nephews (Reagan, Declan, Ella, Kate, James, Cara, and Blake) He will be missed beyond words by his family and his endless circle of friends.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held. He will be privately laid to rest at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas beside his grandparents, Frank and Mary Dobecka. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the Coppell Senior & Community Center at Grapevine Springs located at 345 W. Bethel Rd, Coppell, Texas. At that time loved ones will raise a glass of Pivo and share traditional Klobase and Kolaches in his honor.
For those wishing to make a memorial contribution, the family suggest donating to the American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation, The Crohn’s Foundation of America, or a Czech organization of your choice.
