Harvey is survived by his twin sons: Tyler and Austin
He is predeceased by his brothers Lyle and Roger and his sisters Evelyn and Juanita. His mother, Ruby, passed away in 2010.
Harvey was born in San Saba, TX, on February 23, 1945, to Benson Ivor Vance and Ruby Arnold Burns. He graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1967. He served in the US Air Force as a pilot, and subsequently the Wyoming Air National Guard.
In 1986 he started flying for American Airlines, after a career flying for other now-extinct airlines. On February 2, 1986, Harvey and his then wife, Mies de Vries, welcomed their twin sons, Tyler and Austin into the world, who were the most important part of his life.
Harvey lived a life filled with love, generosity, curiosity and a great sense of humor. He came from humble beginnings and achieved tremendous success as a leader in high school government, a graduate of the US Air Force Academy, and as a pilot in Southeast Asia during Vietnam for the Air Force. Afterwards he went to the Wyoming National Air Guard, and ultimately retired from there. Harvey worked for a few different airlines along the way, and also worked for The National Center for Atmospheric Research early on. He became a stockbroker and financial planner during a layoff from TIA and had his two sons. Harvey touched many lives with his compassion, and a willingness to help. He was a genius in many ways. (Mechanics, computing & aviation to name just a few) but his greatest love and pride was for his 2 sons. Captains Austin and Tyler Vance, who followed their remarkable father in aviation. Harvey saw humor in every subject. So being in his company was always filled with laughter and smiles. Harvey was an inspiration to all that met him. The friends he gathered along the way all became lifelong friends. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
A committal service for Harvey will be held Monday, April 8, 2024 at 9:00 AM at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 76244.
