Joan Ruth Brown Russell Coursey passed away Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Grand Brook Memory Care of Garland at the age of 89. Joan was born April 4, 1931 in Augusta, Maine to the parents of Forest J. Brown and Jessie S. Gould Brown. Joan was the youngest of six children and the only one born in a hospital. Fun fact: 10-day hospital stay for mom and baby cost a whopping $52.00. She graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, ME. Joan had a bit of gypsy blood in her and was always on the move, living in California, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and finally Texas. She loved people and people loved her, which made her successful in all of her sales and marketing ventures. Joan and David Russell married in 1949 and Steve and Margaret were born from their marriage. The family followed the John and Barbara Patterson family to California sometime around 1958. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last. Dave and Steve returned to Maine while Joan and Margaret ended up in Oklahoma. A few years later, Joan met Dewey Coursey and they married. They moved to California, to Arkansas, vacationed in Europe and settled in Texas. Joan and Dewey were married for 30 years. Joan had many adventures but the one constant in her life was her belief in God and Christ. She knew that this life isn’t all there is. Joan is experiencing new life today because of the blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross. She was a faithful steward, a humble servant, and a child of the one and only true God. Joan is survived by her son, Steve Russell and wife Paige of Richmond Hill, GA; grandsons Adam and Seth of Florida; daughter Margaret Kizzia and husband Jerry of Richardson, TX.; grandsons Jay Kizzia of TX, Jason Kizzia and wife, Sarah Rowley of IN. She is also survived by Dewey Coursey’s daughters Linda Maxey of OK, her children Heath and Heather, and Monique Eernisse of TX. In addition, numerous nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren: Jay II, Danielle, and Hope and one great-great granddaughter, Ali Marie. She is preceded in death by her parents Forest and Jessie Brown; sisters Barbara Patterson and Christine Holbrook; brothers Russell, Richard, and Donald Brown; and by her husband Dewey Coursey. A special thank you to the caring staff of Appletree Court Assisted Living of Richardson for six years of friendship and care, and to Grand Brook Memory Care of Garland for their extraordinary loving care and kindness. Joan will be interred at Hendricks Cemetery in Tahlequah, OK alongside Dewey. A public service is not planned but a private family memorial will be held at a later date
