John Michael Sturrock

John Michael Sturrock (Mike) was born in Jasper County, Texas on October 23, 1949 to John Allen and Rachel Mae Yarbrough Sturrock. He graduated from Kirby High School and continued to receive a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A & M University. John was married to Zuria Hutagalung on November 29, 1984. They were married for 40 years.

Mike worked as a civil engineer for Mobil Oil for over 40 years. His career brought him around the world to faraway places such as: Cameroon, Paris, Venezuela, Guam, Russia, and Indonesia where he met his wife Zuria. Mike and Zuria shared a loving relationship up until his final days where he affectionately always called her “Mom”. His face would always light up when he spoke of her. He enjoyed an eclectic array of hobbies: astronomy, anthropology, politics, bird-watching, fictional/non-fictional reading, mathematics, cigars, volcanoes, history, westerns, sci-fi, and that’s just scratching the surface. After retiring, Mike was active with Engineers Without Borders, an organization that helped implement sustainable engineering projects aimed at improving quality of life for disadvantaged communities. In his final years, Mike divided his time into enjoying his retirement at his “command center” in Dallas where he could tap into his politics 24/7 and by visiting Bali yearly to enjoy his beach back massages, ice cold drinks, and Indonesian barbecue ribs with his family.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents Allen & Rachel Sturrock, sister Sharon Martin, brother-in-law William Keith Hendon and niece Britney Sturrock.

Mike is survived by wife, Zuria Sturrock of Dallas; sons Ryan and Scott Sturrock of Dallas. Sisters, Sheri Irwin and husband Keith of Lindale, Sharlott Hickman and husband Randy of Woodville, Brothers, Mark Sturrock and wife Kris of Jacksonville, Stevan Sturrock and wife Connie of Woodville, Brother-in-law Phillip Martin of Woodville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mike will begin on April 30th, 2:00 PM at Metrocrest Funeral Home
