Lieutenant Darlene Gail Raffelson
Darlene began her fire service career in 1978 as a volunteer firefighter with the Ocosta Fire Department. Not long after, Darlene joined South Beach Ambulance in Westport as a volunteer EMT. In 1990, South Beach sponsored her attendance to the Tacoma Community College paramedic program, where Darlene graduated top of her class. After graduating, she was hired as the first and only paramedic in Westport and the surrounding South Beach area. Darlene was instrumental in creating a program that helped fully staff South Beach ambulance. Darlene was present as South Beach became an IAFF affiliate, and was always supportive of a robust volunteer program. In 1999, Darlene was hired at the Tumwater Fire Department. She worked for many years on Medic 5 in the City of Tumwater, as well as, later promoting to Paramedic Lieutenant and eventually Training Lieutenant. As a Training Lieutenant, she fulfilled the role of training officer. Darlene’s career ended with an unfortunate medical retirement in 2015. In August of 2018, Darlene was diagnosed with a duty related cancer. She fought valiantly and with a “can do” attitude. Darlene went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and had multiple surgeries. Earlier this year, with the support of family and close friends, Darlene discontinued treatment. Her wish was to feel good again and live out her final days doing the things she loved. She has done so, with family and friends by her side. Darlene is survived by her mother Bea Ruder. Ex-husband Rick Raffelson. Son Chris and Jennifer Raffelson, Daughter Tammy and Kyle DePriest. Grandchildren Nathan, Caylie, Kristi, Ryann, and Jolene.
We send our condolences to the Raffelson family. Darlene served her community well and she was an example for us all. Rest easy Darlene.
