Elizabeth “Betty” Louise (Conger) Roll of Lacey, Washington, passed away while peacefully asleep on March 11, 2022. She was 85 years old. Betty was born in Portland, Oregon to Violet (Hamm) and Colvin Conger on January 12, 1937.
Betty spent most of her life in Washington State. As a child, Betty and her family lived on a farm on Kent East Hill. She later relocated with her family to Algona, Washington. In 1955, Betty graduated from Federal Way High School. In 1956, she wed Richard “Dick” Roll, a Michigan native serving in the United States Navy. Betty and Dick ultimately settled in Auburn, Washington, where they raised five children. They were married for 23 years when Dick passed away unexpectedly. Betty never remarried. Rather, she dedicated her life to her family and serving the community.
Throughout her life, Betty had a passion for helping the less fortunate and those in need. It was no surprise to anyone when she chose a career in the healthcare industry.
Betty also had a great passion for learning. She attended college at Green River Community College and Seattle University. She was also an avid reader and especially loved murder mysteries, whether in print, on cassette, or on video. After her retirement, Betty developed a passion for gardening. Her garden was always pristine, blooming with native perennials, annuals, and vegetables.
A devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, "Grandma Betty’s" fondest memories undoubtedly included having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren spend the night at her house, watching movies all night. She would cook delightful meals and loved to bake, especially during the holidays. You could not visit her without being offered something good to eat. Betty also enjoyed taking her family adventures in her car. These included British Columbia, Montana, Mount Rainier, Ocean Shores, or just to a local park. She loved the freedom and independence of being behind the wheel.
Betty had an infectious spark that could light up an entire room. In an old high school yearbook, she was described as, “[e]verything a girl should be – and then some.” This spark never ceased, even as she grew into her golden years. Betty always held on to optimism and dreamt of a brighter future. While her passing is a tremendous loss, it is our hope that her spark can be carried on by her descendants and all those who knew and loved her as much as we did.
Betty is survived by her brother David; daughters Patty and Debra (David); sons Rick (Barb) and Mike, Sr.; grandchildren Mike, Jr., Zoe, Garrett, Holly, Amanda, and Shaun; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Violet (Hamm) and Colvin Conger; husband, Richard “Dick” Roll; brother, John Conger; and son, Mark Roll.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 3, 2022, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Mills & Mills Memorial Park, 5725 Littlerock Rd. SW, Tumwater, WA 98312.
