The spirit of Jan will live long in the hearts of all those she loved and helped. Jan peacefully passed on April 3, 2025.
Jan was born in Minnesota in 1938, the daughter of Alma and Robert Haenke. She was the oldest of five, followed by Robert Jr., William, Michael, and Janet. They grew up in Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and various locations in southern California.
Jan was an artist and horse woman, performing in many horse shows and parades. She married Clayton Ferrero and had a son, Casey. Later, she moved to Michigan to care for an aunt and met Jim Riske. They farmed and ranched in Michigan and Minnesota and had a son, Erik. She became a real estate agent, selling homes and farms in a three-county region. She later moved to Washington to be closer to family, where she continued her real estate career in Lewis County, Washington.
Jan was always looking for the next adventure, so she traveled the world, exploring cultures and environments. When she married Richard Schindler, they sold their properties and moved to Arizona. They made new friends there, soaked up the sun, and rallied for their political beliefs. Following Dick’s passing, Jan moved back to Chehalis, Washington and lived in Woodland Village, where she and her loyal dog Pablo made new friends and reconnected with old friends and family.
Jan is survived by her son Casey Riske and his spouse Cecilia Matta, her son Erik Riske and his spouse Kathy Riske, and by her grandson, Paden Riske. Also surviving Jan are her siblings Robert Jr, Michael and Janet.
The family would like to thank the staff at Woodland Village and Jan’s supportive friends there, as well as the fantastic nursing staff at Providence Centralia Hospital.
