Rachel Ann Smith, 55, of Kelso, Washington, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026. She was born on August 21, 1970, in Seattle, Washington.
Rachel was the beloved daughter of Philip Smith and Susan Stafford, and stepdaughter of Pat Patterson. She grew up surrounded by family and carried those close connections with her throughout her life. She graduated high school in 1989 and went on to dedicate much of her adult life as a homemaker, where she created a warm and loving home for those she cared about most.
Rachel was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary and actively participated in National Multiple Sclerosis Society walkathons, demonstrating her compassion and commitment to helping others in her community.
She shared 19 loving years with her life partner, Michael D. Lea, whose companionship meant the world to her. Rachel also cherished her relationships with her siblings, Vernon Barlow and Bridget Barlow, and took great joy in being an aunt to her niece, Ashlyn Patraca (Barlow), and a stepmother to Shea Scklieski-Lea.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, Philip Smith and Susan D. Patterson (Stafford); her son, Nickolas Barns; and her grandparents.
She is survived by her life partner, Michael D. Lea; her brother, Vernon Barlow; her sister, Bridget Barlow; her niece, Ashlyn Patraca (Barlow); and her stepdaughter, Shea Scklieski-Lea.
Rachel touched the lives of so many people, and her unwavering strength and courage were evident throughout her entire life. No matter what challenges came her way, she faced them head-on, always with a bright smile and a positive attitude that inspired everyone around her. Her kindness, resilience, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.
A private service will be held with family. In Rachel’s memory, those who wish may honor her by supporting causes close to her heart or by simply sharing kindness with others, just as she always did.
