Richard was born to Lila and James Mattis on August 31st, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He had two siblings, Bill and George. He graduated from Adna high school in Adna, Washington.
Richard married the love of his life, Lydia Mattis, on April 11th, 1970, in Coquille, Oregon. He worked for Weyerhauser for 23 years and he and he owned and operated a log scaling business until he retired. Richard was very active, he loved tennis, golfing, and he was also an avid hunter.
Richard was preceded in death by his father James Mattis, his mother Lila Mattis, his brothers Bill Mattis and George Mattis, and his nephew Brian Mattis.
Richard is survived by his wife Lydia Mattis; his brother-in-law Scott Mayse; his sister-in-law Sandy Krogman; his brother-in-law John Krogman; his nephews Terry Mattis and Jim Mattis; his nieces Karen Mattis, Cynthia Mayse, Sarah Belcher, LaDina Dougherty, and Jeana Ashley; and many great nieces and nephews.
