

Robert "Bob" Leon Neal, 84, of Rochester, Wash., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at Centralia Country Places Long Term Care Nursing Home. Bob was born in Alabama, but raised in Detroit, Mich. He was an only child.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ernestine Neal.
Surviving him are his wife, Freddie R. Neal, Rochester; sons, Robert, Michael, LePierre, all of Detroit, Mich., Golden of Olympia, Wash., Lobis of Orlando, Fla., and Geoffrey of Rochester, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
After serving in the US Army, Bob moved with Freddie in 1957 to Rochester, Wash. He was the first African-American to graduate from Centralia Community College in 1962 with an Associate's in Arts Degree. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Central Washington State in Art (Teaching). He was a teacher at Maple Lane School (for girls), Jefferson Jr. High School (10 years). After teaching, Bob started his own business in commercial art and photography. His community involvement covers over 10 different areas including: Capital Museum Curator, Southwest Washington Fair Board Member/Head of Jr. Art and Photography (20+ years), Rochester Swede Day program organizer (20+ years) and Grand Marshall, Department of Correction (Job Corp and McNeil Island) community service supervisor (20+ years), Rochester Lion's Club zone chairman, Thurston County Art League member, Union Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America (15+ years), Member of Council of Ministries in the Pacific Northwest United Methodist conference, founding member of Thurston County Urban league, and founding member of the Rochester Food Bank.
The memorial for Robert will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 at the Rochester United Methodist Church, with reception to follow at Rochester Middle School.
