Born on January 20, 1948, Alan began his journey in the West London Borough of Ealing, UK. He attended primary school there before relocating to Canada and then to the United States. He lived in Milwaukee, WI, Cincinnati, OH, St. Louis, MO, and West Palm Beach, FL, before landing in Charlotte, where he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Alan was known by those closest to him as kind-hearted, caring, adventurous, and wonderfully nostalgic. His gentle spirit and thoughtful nature left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He cherished his community and faith, serving as a devoted member of Grace Crossing Baptist Fellowship for 20 years, and for many years previous, served at Idlewild AR Presbyterian Church, now Mint Hill Presbyterian.
Alan had an insatiable love for knowledge and culture. He was passionate about the written word of any kind. He found joy in sharing books and meaningful newspaper and magazine articles he collected throughout the years with others. He was a connoisseur of art and films—especially the classics. He had a refined palate and a great appreciation for good food, which he often paired with his dry English wit that endeared him to many.
He earned the nickname “Recycle King” for his enthusiastic commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible living. Alan's passion extended beyond the planet—he was a champion for justice, civil rights, and the well-being of animals, driven by an unwavering sense of compassion and fairness.
Those who knew Alan will fondly remember his sharp intellect, understated humor, and the enthusiastic way he carried his deep convictions. Though his earthly journey is finished, his legacy of kindness, humor, and quiet activism will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
