Ann was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina to Patsy and S.W. Blackwelder, and grew up alongside her older sister, Kathy Ragsdale. She attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English and became a teacher.
Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and educator whose life was rooted in caring for others. She began her career as a teacher before choosing to stay home to raise her daughters, Amy and Kathryn. Even while at home, she continued teaching by tutoring students for many years, opening her home to children who needed extra help and encouragement.
After her daughters left for college, she returned to the schools as a substitute teacher, continuing to support students and teachers in her community.
Her faith guided much of her life. Ann taught children’s church for many years, served as a Stephen Minister, Elder, and Deacon quietly walking alongside others during difficult seasons and offering comfort and steady support. Ann was an advocate/ambassador for Presbyterian Pilgrimage. She faithfully attended and served as often as she could. She had a gentle way of making people feel seen and loved.
Her greatest pride and joy was her grandson James. She was a dedicated and loving grandmother who chose to stay close and help care for him, alongside husband Jim. She traveled to almost every doctor appointment, infusion, treatment, and any other place he went. She was James’s rock, and time spent with him brought her deep joy and purpose.
Ann truly treated everyone like they were family. Friends, students, neighbors, and church members all experienced her kindness and her willingness to show up when someone needed her. She was known as Mama or Mama Hutton by her daughters’ friends who became chosen family. She was loved and cherished by so many and has left a legacy that will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Patsy and S.W. Blackwelder.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Hutton; her daughters, Amy Kaminski of Mint Hill and Kathryn Burr (Cory Burr) of Mint Hill; her grandson, James Burr; and her sister, Kathy Ragsdale (Murphy Ragsdale) of Southern Pines, NC.
A service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
Ann will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
