She was predeceased by her husband, William Henderson Hill, Jr.; her brother, Jere Leonard “Mort” Morton, Jr. and her parents, Jere Leonard and Lillian Saless Jones Morton of Raleigh, NC.
Originally from Raleigh, Anne graduated from Meredith College and went on to pursue a lifelong love of teaching, both art and the elementary grades. She and her husband Bill led an active life and raised two daughters while living in Decatur, GA; Anne Marie Hill and Gene Elizabeth “Boots” Hill.
Their lives were centered around their love of church, music, art, and family. In Decatur, Anne was an active member of Columbia Presbyterian Church, where she taught Kindergarten, Sunday School and later served as the Director of Christian Education. When her husband retired as a music professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, they moved to Canton, GA where she continued to teach elementary school.
While in Canton, Anne and Bill were led to become founding members of Faith Presbyterian Church, where she continued her work with the children’s ministry. Her love for art was expressed as a volunteer for the Cherokee Arts Council. Anne was instrumental in securing grant funding for the Cherokee Arts Center. She moved to Matthews, NC in 2014 to be closer to family. There she remained faithful to her Christian upbringing becoming an active member of Morning Star Presbyterian Church where she continued to teach in the Presbyterian Women’s fellowship.
The lives Anne touched were all richer for having known her in her many roles, and she will long be remembered for her welcoming smile and kind humility.
Anne is survived by her two adoring daughters, Anne Hill Smethurst (John) of Matthews, NC and Elizabeth Hill Close (Paul) of Cleveland, TN; her beloved sister, Dorothy Jean Morton Abernethy (Chuck – deceased) of Summerville, SC; three loving grandsons, Mark Steven Woodard, Jr. (Jennifer) in Alexandria, VA; William Matthew Puckett in Cleveland, TN; Jesse Paul Puckett (Jessica) in Kingsport, TN; and four lively great grandchildren, Tate Oliver Woodard, Heath Andersen Woodard, Katelyn Nicole Puckett and Wesley Paul Puckett.
