Betty W. Long

March 27, 1930November 15, 2013

Betty Wilson Long, age 83, of Mint Hill, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013 with her family by her side. She was the daughter of Morris and Maggie Wilson and was born on March 27, 1930 in Charlotte. Surviving are her devoted husband of 64 years, Robert (Bobby), her children, Dr. Debra Long Hunt (Gary) and Robert Michael Long (Patti); two grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsay Hunt; and her beloved cat, Missy. Betty attended Central High School in Charlotte, Kings Business College, and CPCC where she received her certificate in Human Services. She was retired from 36 years of service with the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she was Director of Service to Military Families and Veterans/Disaster Services. She led a team of dedicated Red Cross volunteers to provide assistance to victims of disasters, and became a volunteer after retirement. Her awards include designation as a Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Foundation for furtherance of understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world, Special Citations for Exceptional Volunteer Service to the American Red Cross, and a Certificate of Appreciation for humanitarian work with the Red Cross from Elizabeth Dole. She was also an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mint Hill, where she had been a local and district President, and Chairman of the Cancer Research Fund. Betty loved doting on her granddaughters, reading, Duke Basketball, cats, and anything “Betty Boop”. As a dear friend said, “If you look up the definition of lady in the dictionary, you’ll find Betty Long.” A visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Home in Mint Hill on Sunday, November 17, 2013 from 4-6pm, with a funeral to be held at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. The family would appreciate memorials be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, or the American Red Cross, . Bob, Mike, Debbie and Family, words can not express my sorrow for your loss. I am comforted by the fact that she passed peacefully and is no longer suffering or in pain. Thank you for allowing me to share your family. I loved Betty and know I will never find another friend like her. Her kindness will never be forgotten. Please try to remember the wonderful times you had and never hesitate to contact me if you need anything. Much, much, love Kathy Hagler Artom

My sincere sympathy to all of you. I noticed the obituary in today's paper. I went to Duke with Debbie many years ago and always remember my visit to your home once when we were in school together. Sounds like Betty was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.
Deb knew me as Buggy Brown.

Bobby, Debbie, Mike, Patti, and girls, I am so sorry for the loss of your wife, mother and grandmother. She will be with you always in her memories, I know. I have prayed and will continue to pray for all of you! What a wonderful angel heaven has gained.
Mike, I will call you in a couple of days. Just wish I could be there today and/or tomorrow.

Bob, Mike and Family, we will miss Betty as she was a wonderful neighbor. She was also a great email buddy. I remember when our grandchildren would play together when they came to visit you. We will be praying that the Lord will comfort you and fill the emptiness you are feeling with His great love.
