

Mr. Bobby Gregory Poteat passed away on August 25, 2026 at the age of 80. He was born in Valdese, NC on September 8, 1945 to the late Grady and Mary Sue Poteat. Bob lived his whole life in North Carolina-in addition to growing up in Valdese, he lived in Boone, Charlotte, Matthews, and Pineville.
Bob graduated from Valdese High School. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from Appalachian State University. He spent 30 years as an elementary physical education teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. He also spent 12 years as a physical education teacher at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School. Bob met his wife, Sandra, when they were both Freshman at Appalachian. They were married in 1966, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 28th.
If there were one word to describe Bob, it would be “teacher”. In addition to teaching schoolchildren for 42 years, he also taught Sunday School in some capacity for almost 50 years at both Grace Baptist Church and University Hills Baptist Church. He especially loved teaching the older ladies Sunday School class at both churches. Bob coached various sports teams over the years. Most notably, he was the assistant baseball coach at Independence High School for many years. He helped lead Independence to winning the state baseball championship in 1984. Bob enjoyed playing golf with friends and bowling in various leagues throughout his life. He was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves, as well as Carolina Tarheels basketball, baseball, and football teams.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph Poteat and Thomas Poteat, as well as his grandson Joseph Scott Poteat.
Bob is survived by his wife Sandra Holman Poteat, son Scott (Jodi) Poteat and daughter Leigh Ann (Tim) Plemmons, and his grandchildren Grace Poteat, Anne Poteat, and Nathaniel Plemmons. He is also survived by his brother Ronald Poteat.
A drop-in visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Friday, September 4th, 2026 at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Rd., Charlotte, NC 28213. No other service is planned at this time.
