Boyd was born February 1, 1937 in Rockingham County, North Carolina, the second son of the late Wilbur Edison and Ellen Juanita McGee.
He attended Madison High School before joining the US Army and serving as a teletype operator in Germany. After the military, he worked for Duke Power Company for over 35 years. He started as a lineman in Greensboro NC and later created Duke's OSHA Safety division in Charlotte NC, where he served as a safety consultant until retiring.
Boyd loved his family, friends, music and to serve others. He always had a smile on his face and greeted everyone with a hearty handshake. In the late 1980’s Boyd began a catering business in Charlotte area where he served award winning BBQ for over 20 years. Boyd had a love of music, especially Bluegrass. Shortly after 2000, he followed this passion and started his own bluegrass band, Toby Creek. Known for his vocals he was the lead singer and also played guitar. His band played all over NC, SC and VA.
He was a member of Newell Masonic Lodge, Oasis Shrine Club, and Newell Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his son, Brian McGee and wife Tricia of Harrisburg, daughter, Stacey McGee of Charlotte, grandsons Cameron McGee of Charlotte and Conor McGee and wife Anna of Sherrill’s Ford. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Becky McGee, his parents and two siblings.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday February 1, 2025 at Back Creek Church, 1821 Back Creek Church Road, Charlotte NC 28213. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00pm-2:00pm prior to the service at the church.
