Born on December 24, 1947, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Handy was the cherished son of the late Carl Cooper and Ida Cooper. A lifelong Charlotte native, he graduated from North Meck High School and went on to dedicate his professional life to public service, spending his career with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, where he worked in the Property Department. His work was marked by quiet dedication, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others.
Handy was a man of deep faith. He attended Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, where his love for the Lord was evident in both word and deed. He was also proud to be a member of the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge and the Mint Hill Eastern Star, organizations that reflected his commitment to fellowship, service, and community.
In his leisure time, Handy found great joy in playing golf, cooking, baking, and spending time with his beloved dog, Buddy, who brought him constant companionship. Those who knew him best will fondly remember his warm smile, patient spirit, and kind heart. He was known for always being helpful, gentle, and loving, and for living his faith through everyday actions. His family will especially cherish memories of his delicious homemade pound cakes, lovingly made and generously shared.
Handy was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ida Cooper, and by his brother, Mickey Cooper.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Janice Sullivan Cooper; his beloved dog, Buddy; and several cousins, all of whom will deeply miss his presence but remain grateful for a life so well lived.
A service to celebrate Handy’s life will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 11:00am at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church Bain School Road Mint Hill, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to either Philadelphia Presbyterian Church or the Charlotte ASPCA.
